Behind the music on the Pull and Bear website lies Carlos Moreno, aka MORENIGHT.

We get asked the same question again and again, not only through our web site www.pullandbear.com but also in the videos that our admirers upload on YouTube… Where can I get hold of and who is the author of the music on our website? So in order to satisfy once and for all our netsurfers’ curiosity, we present Carlos Moreno, a young man living in A Coruña (Spain) and also known as Morenight. He composes specifically for Pull and Bear each of the songs you can hear on the Pull and Bear website, and we will shortly be giving away these songs as a digital album.

WHO IS MORENIGHT AND WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
I’ve been composing and playing music since the beginning of the 90s although I don’t make a living from it. After playing the guitar in various groups, I am now a member of “Dr. Funkstein”, a band from A Coruña. In my free time, I compose and produce songs in my home studio, many of which are for the Pull and Bear website. I do it mainly for pleasure and, although it may sound clichéd, it would be impossible for me to live without music. The name Morenight was thought up by a good friend when we were at college and it’s a reference to my surname Moreno. I liked it and adopted it as my own.

YOUR BAND, YOUR ORIGINS, THE CONCERTS, THE STYLE OF MUSIC…
Dr. Funkstein was formed in 2000 with the sole purpose of playing in just one festival. The experience was so rewarding that we decided to carry on with the project. At first, the band was made up of a drums-bass-guitar-vocal quartet, with the addition of a saxophone. We play dance rock with a touch of electronica and we approach our concerts in a totally different way to our recordings. In 2007 we released our first CD which we produced ourselves under the title “Toda la noche” (All night). During the last 3 years we have travelled throughout Galicia playing more than 80 concerts, our only plan being to enjoy ourselves on stage and do some gastronomic tourism.

DO YOU PREFER YOUR PERSONAL MUSIC OR COMMERCIAL MUSIC, THE WRITING PROCESS OR PLAYING LIVE?
I think that for a musician to reach maturity, it’s essential to play on many stages, both in small places and in festivals. The studio gives you creativity and the stage, adrenalin and pure fun. I have no problem with commercial music, in fact I would like my songs to be commercial, although it’s not something I aim for when I’m composing.

THE PROCESS AND TECHNIQUE YOU FOLLOW WHEN YOU COMPOSE SONGS FOR THE WEBSITE
Due to the nature of the project, I don’t record these songs with a band, I use electronics and samplers which makes the production process more dynamic. I like to create my own sounds and to experiment. They are very personal songs. 90% of the time and I am completely alone in the studio. As for the composing, ideas come in a natural way, trying to absorb what I like most from each style.

ANY TRICKS TO WRITE THE SONGS?
I don’t have any, or at least I’m not conscious of them. Just enthusiasm, and wanting to play and enjoy myself. If I try to force things, the result isn’t fresh. You need to let things flow. As for the vocals, I’ve always done backing vocals in the bands, and this time round I’ve started to introduce my own voice in the recordings.

THE STYLE YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH
Oof… When I play it tends to be the same thing, and I think it could be rock, blues, funk, soul…I also like electronic music and pop very much; we play a few songs with a techno backing live… and it’s great! My basic influences on guitar could be Nile Rodgers, Hendrix or Prince amongst others… without taking comparisons too far of course.

OF ALL THE SONGS YOU’VE COMPOSED FOR THE WEB, WHICH ONE REALLY STANDS OUT?
“Electro-Ride” and “Electro-Flight” are my favourites. In fact I liked “Electro-Flight” so much that we’ve adapted and added lyrics to it for my band Dr. Funkstein and named it “Hay un vuelo…” (There’s a flight…).
